As its major job is related to blood, it can develop following disorders called Haematologist Diseases:

    • Hereditary spherocytosis (abnormally shaped red blood cells)

    • Idiopathic thrombocytopenia purpura (ITP) (poor function and decreased number of platelets resulting in frequent bruising and bleeding)

    • Thalassemia (decreased production of hemoglobin)

    • Splenomegaly (enlargement of the spleen)

    Diagnosis of Spleen Disorders

A physical examination along with blood test, CT scan or MRI scan would confirm the diagnosis of spleen disorder.

    Laparoscopic Splenectomy for Spleen Disorders

Although spleen is an important part of our immune system but a person can survive without it as most of its functions can be taken over by liver. Laparoscopic Splenectomy is performed in patients with spleen disorders.

The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia with surgeon making 3-4 tiny incisions in the abdomen. One of the incisions is used to insert a port (nozzle) that fills the carbon dioxide gas into the abdomen to inflate it. Now laparoscope is inserted through another incision. A laparoscope is a telescope lookalike with a light and camera on the end. It allows the surgeon to clearly view inside of the abdomen on the monitor outside. Now using surgical instruments, cuts are made in the pylorus to loosen the muscle and enhance the opening of the stomach. After the completion of procedure, incisions are closed with sutures or staples, or covered with glue-like bandage.
