Treating Hiatal Hernia with Laparoscopy

Hiatal hernia is a disorder that occurs due to the upward push of the stomach through the diaphragm. Though the usual mode of treatment for hiatal hernia involves the treatment of its symptoms, in severe cases, surgeries are also done. Not a common disease, it can be controlled with the help of small measures and medications during the initial stages.
Oesophagus passes to the stomach through a small opening known as hiatus. Hiatal hernia occurs when the stomach pushes back through this opening. It is mainly caused as a result of obesity, aging, pregnancy or due to the thinning of pharyngoesophageal membrane. Small instances of the disease do not show any symptoms.

Diagnosis

The diagnosis leading to the treatment of hiatal hernia includes physical examination of the chest and abdominal area, test for checking the air fluid level of chest, chest X-ray, upper endoscopy, manometry and barium swallow.

Treatment for Hiatal Hernia

Hiatal hernia is usually treated with medications for symptoms like antacids but severe cases of hiatal hernia demand medical procedures. The main treatment for hiatal hernia is known as Laparoscopic Cruroplasty and Nissen Fundoplication. This is a laparoscopic procedure that involves about five incisions of quarter inch used to insert the laparoscope and other equipment needed for the surgery.
The main concept of the treatment is to reduce the hernia from the chest to the stomach. For this, the separation of chest and lung structures from stomach is done surgically. The procedure takes about 2 to 4 hours for completion but has a small recovery time. With more than 90% success rate, the procedure is rather simple and painless.
